The tranquil oasis in Hong Kong: Nan Lian Garden & Chi Lin Nunnery

Wanting to escape the buzz of Hong Kong to beautiful and relaxing surroundings? Then Nan Lian Garden and the Chi Lin Nunnery inside the garden are the place to go. They offer an oasis middle of a bustling city, a place to relax where I also always enjoy returning to.

The design of the Nan Lian Garden and the Nunnery are from the times of Tang Dynasty, and include several small temples, little lakes and beautifully cut trees.

The well kept garden also includes a rock museum and a display of Chinese timber architecture.

Chi Lin Nunnery is the biggest Buddhist nunnery in Hong Kong. It’s inner court yards have large pools with nice water lilies, and you have also huge and beautiful statues of Buddha inside the temple (which you cannot photograph).

If you are vegetarian and interested in trying authentic Chinese cuisine, the garden also hosts a good restaurant offering some very unique Chinese vegetarian dishes with plants and mushrooms I had never before heard of.

Both the garden and nunnery are free to visit and are located right next to Diamond hill metro station.
