So... I really did not know what to expect when heading towards the Venetian. We got there with a Taxi from the Senado Square (even if it takes a while taxis are very cheap in Macau so very convenient). The best words to describe the place are maybe huge and crazy. The place is, as... Continue Reading →
St. Augustine’s Square & St. Lawrence Church
There's more interesting Portuguese architecture to see also in the opposite direction (vs St. Paul). Especially if weather is good this makes a nice walking tour up to A-Ma temple - you can check out the proposed walking route here. Given it was raining, we didn't continue as far but did pass for example the... Continue Reading →
Lunch at BOA Mesa Comida Portuguesa in Macau
BOA Mesa Comida Portuegesa is a great casual place to have some authentic Portuguese food near the Senado square. They have plenty of seafood available, but also some meat. Given its hidden few streets away from the Senado square it is also not too touristic and prices are very decent.
The ruins of St. Paul
The ruins of St Paul are maybe the most famous sight in Macau and located some 500m away from the Senado Square. The large stairs and the front façade are the only remains of this great church today.
The alleys towards St Paul’s ruins on a rainy day
The route towards St. Paul's goes through small alleys which are always packed with tourists. On a rainy day moving might get tough given that everyone is holding an umbrella.Along the alleys are plenty of shops selling the local delicacies e.g. air dried meat and Portuguese egg tarts.
St. Dominic’s Church
Just few hundred meters from Senado Square towards the ruins of St' Paul's (the direction which most tourists are heading from the Senado Square) is the small church of St. Dominic's.
Senado Square
Most people come to Macau with a ferry from Hong Kong, either the airport or Hong Kong Island. In our case, we came with TurboJET from Hong Kong Island. If you know when you want to travel, I highly recommend purchasing tickets in advance as otherwise you will often have to pay extra for premium... Continue Reading →
Kabukicho – the red light district of Tokyo
Kabukicho is Tokyo's version of ared lights district and home to some famous (and a bit weird) places like the Robot Restaurant. It is full of blinking lights and sounds.
Samurai Museum – such a cool place!
Samurai Museum is small but for me atleast something unique I hadn't seen before so was truly interesting. You typically explore the place with a guide and they told a lot of the history of Samurai, and you also get to see a Samurai performance.
Japanese cooking class at our house in Tokyo
We also wanted to learn about Japanese cooking and hired a private chef to teach and cook with us booked via Prime Chef. The menu included many new food items varying from sushi style salads to omelettes, seasonal vegetables and special kind of tempura.
Japanese Onsen for couples & Yakiniku in Kerima, Tokyo
One definite item on our TODO list was visiting a Japanese Onsen. Most of these natural baths are actually gender separated, so ti took a bit of effort to find one suitable for couples, but we found one in Nerima Toshimaen Niwa no yu .The visit was just perfect with coom area for men and women... Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden – Cherry blossoms
We had been hoping to see plenty of cherry blossoms on our trip, but unfortunately due to couple of weeks of really cold weather only the very first trees were actually blossoming. Regardless we still wanted to visit the no.1 place for viewing, the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden which already had long lines of people... Continue Reading →
Hiking at Mount Takao near Tokyo
I was originally thinking about going to mount Fuji, but given the high risk of not seeing anything there on a cloudy day and the long distance, I opted for some hiking and views at Mount Takao with a convenient train ride away from Shibuya.Mount Takoa is both a nice place for hiking, but many... Brewery & Korean BBQ lunch with a view in Ebisu, Tokyo
Ebisu is just 1 train stop away from Shibuya and has beer museum to offer for beer lovers. This was not however the reason I was there: I was there to have lunch with a view at Jojoen Ebisu Garden, a korean BBQ restaurant.
Yoyogi Park and Meiji Shrine: nice place for a stroll or run
Tokyo has surprisingly many large parks in the center and Yoyogi Park is on of them. I started wondering through it from the north and there were surprisingly few people there until I arrived closer to the Meiji Shrine, which unfortunately was under renovation so could not fully enjoy it.Before the Meiji Shrine, I also... Shibuya – the modern center of Tokyo
Shibuya and Shinjuku are the modern centers of Tokyo with all the shops and restaurants you could imagine, and of course a lot of people - many go to Shibuya just for that: look how pedestrian cross the roads in all direction when lights turn green.Shinjuku and Shibuya are also the transport hubs of Tokyo,... Our house & surroundings in Shibuya, Tokyo
We stayed at a house via Airbnb at a residential area 2 metro stops from Shibuya which was a super convenient location for getting around Tokyo. What surprised me about Tokyo was that even in the city center, the houses are not tall and you feel like you're not in a big city. But all... Continue Reading →
Some great seafood dinners at Phu Quoc
On few evenings we enjoyed our dinner at Mango Bay Resort which is the best restaurant (especially by value but also good quality) in the nearby area. The restaurant does not only have good food but also great atmosphere as it is located partially above water and has large terrace. One evening we also had... Continue Reading →
Exploring Phu Quoc with a scooter
In order to explore the northern parts of the Phu Quoc island a bit more we also rented a scooter for a day (from the hotel, approx 10€/day). We first stopped at the river for some kayaking. We rented the kayaks from a lovely restaurant Phuong Vi by the river, which is also a great place... Continue Reading →
Snorkelling was surprisingly good at our beach in Phu Quoc
On few days we also put on our masks and snorkels and snorkelled in front of the hotel. To our surprise, there was actually some small but colourful corals and fish there, so definitely fun for an hour or so. As the waters were just settling down (and visibility limited off shore) after the rainy season it did... Continue Reading →
