Whenever Cape Town and wineries are mentioned, the first wine region that pops into everyone’s mind is of course Stellenbosch (which unarguable is also worth visiting). However, there is actually also a very high quality, much smaller wine region much nearer to Cape Town: Constantia.
During our trip, we only did official wine tasting at Constantia Glen, where we enjoyed their premium tasting for 80 rands. The tasting included 7 different red, rose and white wines, all blends made from typical Bordeaux grapes (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillion etc.. A very nice experience in an incredible setting: you can taste the wines while looking at the wine yards and the back of Table Mountain, expect Bordeaux wines have never been my favourite.
We also enjoyed dinner at Groot Constantia, where we also tasted 3 of their red’s and one of their white wines. I must say I much preferred their wines, both the Merlot and Shiraz were excellent. And the dinner at Jonkershuis restaurant was simply delicious! mmmmm….
While we visited the place for dinner, we have also been told place is excellent for lunch when you can also wander around the vineyards.
